Nelson MP Nick Smith has welcomed the formal opening of NMIT’s new $7.9 million applied technology facility.
"This modern facility will enable NMIT to deliver the highly skilled tradespeople, engineers and mariners for the future.
"Our community and country has under-valued and under invested in these practical skills areas over the past two decades and it is timely that these tutors and students now have world-class facilities for their skills development."
"I am particularly delighted as a civil engineer that NMIT is now able to offer a diploma programme in civil engineering.
"This addition, as well as the new aquaculture diploma introduced in 2010, reflects the Government’s emphasis on tertiary education programmes that will support growing industries and our regional economy.
"Nelson should be very proud of the new facilities and programmes at NMIT. NMIT is a well governed and managed institution that is building the skills base that will help success and prosperity across the top of the South."
Dr Smith had planned to attend today’s opening with Prime Minister John Key but they were unable to make it due to fog closing Wellington Airport.
"I am very grateful to Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese for the wonderful job that she did stepping in to open this facility in our absence."
