Nelson’s MP Hon Dr Nick Smith was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship, the Rotary Foundation’s highest award, when he presented his 19th annual "state of the nation’’ speech to the Rotary Club of Nelson West.
In presenting the award, Rotary District Governor John Rickard noted that Dr Smith has been a "tireless community champion’’, a well experienced proponent of "sticking up for locals who may have been up against it’’, either through the actions or dealing with government departments, caught up with problems overseas or otherwise unjustly treated by a business. Rickard added that Dr Smith has been very supportive of the local community, be it the arts, roading and other infrastructural issues, sports events or even school fairs.
In 1957 the Rotary Foundation established the Paul Harris Fellowship – an award president to Rotary members to persons in the community who have made significant contributions to the ideals of Rotary and to their club and/or their community. Rotary clubs are allocated one PHF for every US$1000 donated to the Rotary Foundation. Per member, the Rotary Club of Nelson West is the leading contributor to the Rotary Foundation in District 9970.
To quote Paul Harris: "Whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves.’’
John Rickard, the District Governor of Rotary District 9970 – the 36 clubs between Motueka and Ashburton – made the Paul Harris Award presentation to Dr Smith on behalf of District 9970 and the World President of Rotary.
