Nelson MP Nick Smith welcomed today’s announcement of $1.25 million grant from the NZ Lottery Significant Projects Fund for Nelson’s Brook Waimarama Sanctuary.
"This 700ha pest free sanctuary is an iconic Nelson project that will restore the dawn chorus of native birds for our city.
"It can only be achieved with strong support from council, Government and the community. This grant is the crucial step required to get this project underway."
"I’m delighted the Lottery Grants Board has recognised the merits of this project and I applaud them for their decision."
"It is also a credit to the highly professional approach adopted by the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust and huge volunteer effort that’s already gone into developing the sanctuary."
Dr Smith has long supported the Brook Sanctuary and wrote a letter to Lotteries to help persuade the board of the merits of the project.
